Best Resin for 3D Printed Terrain and Tabletop Scenery
The short answer: For tabletop terrain and props, use HERO HD on pieces that get handled, bumped and packed into a bag, like doors, barricades, objective markers and scatter with thin parts. Use Standard HD or RPG Medium Grey for larger scenery that mostly sits on the table, where value per kilogram matters more than flex. All three are made in the USA and take paint straight on with InstantEffect.
What terrain needs from a resin
Terrain is different from a single hero mini. You print more of it, the pieces are larger, and some of it lives a hard life in a tote or a carry case. When you choose a resin for scenery and props, think about four things:
- Toughness: will thin railings, antennas, branches and spikes survive being knocked over?
- Cost per piece: big buildings and full tables use a lot of resin.
- Detail: bricks, wood grain and rivets should stay crisp so they catch paint.
- Paint workflow: a whole table of terrain needs a fast way to finish it.

HERO HD for props that get handled
HERO HD is built for miniatures, terrain and detailed gaming pieces that have to survive handling, drops and transport. With elongation at break of 30 to 35 percent, thin features flex instead of snapping. That makes it the right pick for terrain with fragile details: fences, ladders, trees, gun emplacements, objective markers and anything a player will pick up every turn.
HERO HD is fully cured with heat at 215 to 275°F for a minimum of one hour, and UV curing is optional. Heat cures all the way through, which matters on chunky terrain where UV light may not reach the core. We typically recommend starting with a large countertop oven from any big box store, ideally with an air fryer feature, because the moving air heats parts evenly. Read the HERO HD curing guide for the full process.
For terrain, HERO HD Medium Grey and Light Grey make clean neutral bases for stone and metal, and Sienna is a natural start for earth and wood tones. Medium Grey also comes in a 1 kg bottle if you want to try it on a few pieces first.
Standard HD for big scenery on a budget
Standard HD is our value resin for high detail models. It is ACMO free, made in the USA with no fillers, and comes in a 4 kg Easy Pour Jug or a box of four jugs for 16 kg total, which suits printing a whole table. At Shore D 80 it is firm and rigid, so it works best on buildings, ruins, walls and display boards that sit still on the table rather than parts that bend.
Standard HD Flat Grey has a flat, non glossy finish that shows texture well, and on an Elegoo Saturn 4 or Saturn 5 we publish a starting point at 100 micron layers with 4.5 to 5.2 seconds normal exposure. Thicker layers mean faster prints, which helps when you are filling a board. Standard HD Dark Cool Grey is the other color option.
RPG Medium Grey as the middle ground
RPG Medium Grey is an affordable, high detail ABS style resin that is non brittle, low odor and easy to clean up. It prints fast at 2.5 to 3 seconds normal exposure on most mono screen printers. Its medium grey finish is an ideal base for painting, and it is made for characters, monsters and scenery, so it is a good all round choice when you want one resin for minis and terrain.
Printing tips for terrain
- Start from published settings. Our printer guide lists starting exposures for Elegoo Saturn, Mars and Phrozen Sonic printers, and the full sheet is on the exposure settings page.
- Calibrate first. Run the Starship calibration test before a long terrain print so a big job does not fail halfway.
- Shake well and watch temperature. Shake the resin before use and print between 18 and 28°C.
- Clean thoroughly. Large terrain has a lot of surface and texture that holds liquid. Clean off uncured resin with high purity IPA or Rhino Resin Cleaner, then dry completely. See how to clean resin prints.
- Cure evenly. Make sure every side gets equal exposure so large flat pieces shrink evenly and do not warp.
Paint a whole table fast
Terrain is where InstantEffect really saves time. It is our water based acrylic that gives color and shade in one coat, and it goes straight onto the resin. The 10 color box set supports three methods: SlapChop, Contrast and Airbrush. For terrain, try SlapChop by dry brushing DryBrush White over stonework and then washing over it with color, or airbrush InstantEffect undiluted to cover a big building in minutes. Bog Oak is great for wood and earth, and Void Black works for deep shadow. Singles are $9.95. See our guide on painting resin prints without primer.
Free Standard shipping applies on orders of $44 and up in the lower 48.
FAQ
What is the best resin for 3D printed terrain?
HERO HD for pieces that get handled and have thin parts, Standard HD for large static scenery at a value price, and RPG Medium Grey for an affordable all round resin.
Is standard resin good enough for terrain?
For buildings and walls that mostly sit on the table, yes. Standard HD is rigid at Shore D 80. For thin props that get knocked around, choose HERO HD, which flexes instead of snapping.
Can I print terrain at 100 micron layers?
Yes. We publish a Standard HD Flat Grey starting point for the Elegoo Saturn 4 and Saturn 5 at 100 microns. Calibrate on your own printer first.
Do I need to prime resin terrain before painting?
Not with InstantEffect. Clean and cure the piece, then paint straight onto the resin.
